Features

Everything it needs, nothing it doesn't

Kharcha does one job, turning bank SMS into a clean spending record, and it tries to do that job without ever asking more of your phone than it needs.

One tap to categorize

The moment a payment SMS from a new payee lands, a quiet notification offers your three most-used categories as buttons. Tap once and it's filed.

Every account, kept separate

Each bank account, credit card and debit card gets tracked on its own in the Accounts tab, so a card bill never gets mixed up with your salary account.

Duplicates, actually handled

Same reference number, amount and account counts once, no matter how many senders report it. A card spend and its bill payment never get counted twice.

Needs a look, not a guess

Unknown senders, personal phone numbers, foreign currency or conflicting wording go into a review queue instead of being silently miscategorized.

Paisa-accurate parsing

Amounts are parsed exactly in paise, never as floating point, and balance, credit limit or amount due is never mistaken for what you actually spent.

Nothing to set up

No account creation, no OTP, no linking your bank. Install it, grant one permission, and the next SMS that arrives is already being tracked.

How it works

From SMS to spending record in three steps

No dashboards to configure and nothing to import. It starts working the moment your bank texts you.

1

A bank SMS arrives

Kharcha reads it on the phone, the instant it lands, pulling out the amount, the account or card, and who got paid.

2

New payee, one tap

A notification pops up with your three most-used categories as buttons. Tap once, or tap the body for the full list and to rename the payee.

3

Known payee, no fuss

Categorize someone once and every future payment to them is tracked silently, no notification, no interruption.

Privacy, where it matters

Your bank SMS never leaves your phone. Ads don't change that.

Most expense trackers ask you to link your bank or forward statements to a cloud service. Kharcha was built the other way around, your SMS is parsed locally and your spending history is stored locally. The app shows ads to stay free, and that part of the app runs separately, with no access to your messages or transaction data.

Your transaction data stays local

Spending history, categories and account balances live in a database on your device, not on a server.

No account, no backend for your data

There's no sign-up and no server that stores or processes your SMS content or spending data.

No bank login, ever

Kharcha only reads the SMS your bank already sends you. It never asks for net banking credentials or card details.

Ads kept separate, by design

The code that talks to the internet for ads is a different part of the app than the code that reads and stores your SMS and spending history.

Install it in under a minute

Kharcha asks for READ_SMS, which the Play Store only allows for a small set of approved use cases pending a permissions review. Until that's cleared, the APK is available to install directly, same app, same code, just not through the Play Store yet.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

No, for reading, categorizing and storing your transactions, all of that happens on your device whether or not you're connected. The app does use an internet connection for one thing only, showing the ads that keep it free, and that part of the app has no access to your SMS or spending data.
Kharcha matches official DLT sender IDs for major Indian banks, HDFC, ICICI, SBI, Axis, Kotak and more, along with UPI, NEFT and card transaction formats. If a format isn't recognized yet, it's added as a test case and the parser is updated to handle it.
Anything ambiguous, an unknown sender, a personal phone number, foreign currency, or wording that could be read two ways, goes to a "needs a look" queue instead of being guessed at and counted. OTPs, statements, due reminders and promotional messages are ignored entirely.
Kharcha matches on bank reference number, amount and account to collapse true duplicates, including the same SMS arriving twice from your carrier. If the same amount comes from a different sender within 10 minutes, it's flagged as a possible duplicate and held out of your totals until you confirm it.
Yes, free to download with no subscription and no in-app purchases. It's supported by ads, which is also the only reason the app uses an internet connection.
You can install it right now by downloading the APK above and allowing installs from your browser or file manager. It's the same release that will eventually go through the Play Store's permissions review.

Try it on your next payment

Install Kharcha and the very next bank SMS you get is already being tracked.
